Roses are among the most beloved flowers, known for their beauty and fragrance. To ensure they thrive, proper planting and care are essential. Here’s a step-by-step guide to planting roses in Central Europe, along with tips for post-planting care.

Best Time to Plant Roses

In Central Europe, the ideal time to plant roses is during their dormant season, which is typically from late October to early April. However, the best months are autumn (October-November) and early spring (March-April). Planting during these periods allows the roots to establish themselves before the growing season begins.

Steps for Planting Roses

1. Choose the Right Location:
   Roses need at least 6 hours of sunlight daily and well-drained soil. Avoid areas with strong winds or where roses have previously grown, as this can lead to soil-borne diseases.

2. Prepare the Soil:
   Roses thrive in fertile, loamy soil with a slightly acidic pH (6.0-6.5). Dig a hole about 50 cm deep and wide, and mix the excavated soil with compost or well-rotted manure to enrich it.

3. Soak the Roots:
   Before planting, soak bare-root roses in water for 2-3 hours to rehydrate them. For potted roses, water the root ball thoroughly.

4. Plant the Rose:
   Place the rose in the hole, ensuring the graft union (the swollen area where the rose is grafted onto rootstock) is 5 cm below the soil surface. Spread the roots evenly and fill the hole with the prepared soil mixture.

5. Water Thoroughly:
   After planting, water the rose generously to settle the soil and eliminate air pockets.

Care After Planting

1. Mulching:
   Apply a layer of mulch (e.g., bark chips or compost) around the base of the rose to retain moisture, regulate soil temperature, and suppress weeds. Keep the mulch a few centimeters away from the stem to prevent rot.

2. Watering:
   Water newly planted roses regularly, especially during dry spells. Ensure the soil remains moist but not waterlogged.

3. Fertilizing:
   Avoid fertilizing immediately after planting. Wait until the rose shows new growth, then apply a balanced rose fertilizer according to the manufacturer’s instructions.

4. Pruning:
   Prune roses in early spring to remove dead or damaged wood and encourage healthy growth. For newly planted roses, light pruning is sufficient.

5. Winter Protection:
   In late autumn, mound soil or mulch around the base of the rose to protect it from freezing temperatures.
